A personal digital assistant (PDA) programmed with model menus guides dietetic technicians in the step by step, almost automated, creation of new-patient profiles. Moving from room to room and in a simple, intuitive way, without risk of omission, the technician selects all the restrictions, preferences, and instructions to be taken into account. Then it’s just a matter of placing the PDA on its base to automatically download patient dietary profiles into the facility’s computer system.

Gone are the days when patient records had to be studied, forms had to be completed, and orders had to be copied out by hand. Now, just a few taps with a stylus are all that is needed to design an attractive and personalized menu. Impersonal forms are no longer required. When the rounds of the rooms are done, the technician need only place the pocket assistant on its base to transfer orders to the kitchens, record the dietary data in a nutritional assessment module, and archive meal histories.
